Professional therapy is the gold standard for addiction treatment and can give you the tools needed to ask the right questions and engage in social recovery communities. As you progress through rehab, it can be helpful to build a community of support from peers who have also experienced addiction and recovery. Social support, including online communities and social media, has been extensively studied in its role in long-term recovery from substance abuse.

What does the research say about online addiction communities?

Research has concluded that social communities, including online forums and social media rooted in addiction recovery, have a positive effect on both long and short-term addiction recovery. For example, it was found that after six weeks in an in-patient addiction treatment program, people recovering from alcohol abuse whose outside social networks supported sobriety showed improvements in their overall recovery compared to those whose social networks supported alcohol consumptionOnline forums for addiction and recovery have existed for at least 10 years and have been extensively studied as treatment recovery tools. Findings from these studies on Reddit and other social networking tools that are specific to addiction strongly suggest digital networks are very effective in promoting long-term addiction recovery across a variety of substances and behaviors.

Keeping conversations supportive and respectful

Addiction online forums and communities such as Reddit are helpful as you may want to ask about minor problems or try to relate with people who have shared your experience.  These online communities can be a great outlet for this type of connection and support. For example, Tik Tok has been a leader in the addiction recovery online community.

As with every online forum, it is important to be respectful of boundaries and other people’s feelings and opinions. It is also important to protect your own boundaries, so if you notice anything that is not conducive to your recovery journey, “exiting the conversation” is always a healthy option. If you are searching for an online addiction recovery community, Reddit can be a great resource. One of the benefits of talking on forums online is that you are likely to get a response quickly and hear from a lot of different perspectives.
