As one of the nation’s largest health insurance providers, United Healthcare offers an array of policies with varying degrees of coverage. While the vast majority of United Healthcare plans provide assistance for addiction treatment, the payment of services and upfront costs fluctuate based on the policy and location.
United Healthcare supports those who are looking to recover from a drug or alcohol addiction. United Healthcare works with an individual’s needs to find nearby treatment services. United Healthcare insurance policies have different options for Detox, Inpatient, and Outpatient rehab, as well as other mental health services to help on your path to recovery. Depending on your individual United Healthcare insurance plan, your inpatient and outpatient rehab coverage will vary.
Many United Healthcare plans provide assistance for drug and alcohol treatment services. Upfront costs of recovery programs may fluctuate based on your individual United Healthcare policy and your state of residence.
To ensure those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction receive care, United Healthcare has a separate division known as United Behavioral Health. This division provides confidential services for individuals to speak with a substance abuse healthcare provider.
Drug and alcohol addiction services included in policies often consist of:
Typically, a PPO network policy will offer a wide range of substance abuse treatment facilities compared to other plans available. Some policies may also have pre-certification requirements depending on the services provided and whether the program is inpatient or outpatient. Mental illness affects millions of Americans, and is common among those with substance abuse issues. Insurance providers are legally required to cover mental health services. In many cases, mental health problems can co-occur with substance use, so it is important to address mental health concerns if you are seeking care for substance misuse and addiction.
United Healthcare typically covers individual therapy sessions for people with substance abuse issues and other mental health conditions. United Healthcare may cover therapy fully or partially depending upon the member’s plan.
Inpatient rehab coverage depends solely on the type of United Healthcare plan you have, as well as the state you reside in. In addition to individual and family insurance plans, United Healthcare offers short term medical plans which may also cover a substance abuse treatment program. Find information below in regards to short term plan coverage.
As part of United Healthcare’s short-term medical plans, many individuals’ policies help cover substance abuse programs. An exception to this is the lowest premium plan – Short Term Medical Value – which does not cover expenses related to drug and alcohol abuse treatment. The remaining short-term plans, however, all provide some assistance to policyholders.
Short-Term Medical Plus policies and United Healthcare’s more comprehensive plans have around a 20-30% deductible. After paying your deductible, which can range from $1,000 to $10,000, insurance will kick in. It’s important to note that these policies carry a term maximum of $3,000 which means individuals are responsible for anything above that amount.
United Healthcare’s outpatient rehab coverage is very similar to the inpatient benefits offered. One of the company’s lower-level plans, short-term coverage, offers help to cover drug and alcohol rehabilitation; however, expenses accrued may vary.
United Healthcare’s short-term plan’s outpatient coverage involves 20-30% coinsurance after deductible. For individual outpatient doctor visits, patients are limited to $50 per visit. For short-term coverage, there is a $3,000 policy term maximum per covered person.

No, oftentimes treatment centers are not required to be in-network. However, some plans will require a steeper coinsurance percentage or copays in order to see a provider that’s not in your network. Other plans may not cover out-of-network services altogether, leaving you responsible for the costs.
Treatment centers do not always need to be in-network. However, check with a United Healthcare representative to determine your out-of-network coverage and the costs you will be responsible for.
